Apps are essential for our everyday life, but unfortunately, they also pose a threat to our online security. The truth is that our phones have an overwhelming amount of information about us, our habits, likes and dislikes, how we communicate and who we communicate with. It’s not just the companies that produce our phones but it is also the app we use on a daily basis. This is why we've combined the list of the top 5 worst apps for your online security. 

And we know, some of the apps listed here are pretty hard to get rid of, unless you’re trying to alienate yourself from the rest of the world. Our only hope here is that you will at least approach these apps with more caution and take those extra steps to protect your privacy as much as possible. 

Facebooks

This probably comes as no surprise to most people, but Facebook is one of the worst apps when it comes to privacy. While it may be the most popular and widely used social media platform/app, it is also the worst when it comes to privacy and security. Facebook has been a part of numerous scandals revolving around the problematic practices of Big Tech and the many instances of serious data breaches. So far it looks like there is a culture of privacy abuse in all major social media platforms. Still, Facebook stands out as the most invasive app that tracks your every step and benefits greatly from it. Facebook has an overwhelming list of terms and conditions, which grants the app the permission to track your contacts, private messages, your camera and microphone, your Wi-fi, and even your location. It continues to track your every move even when you are not using Facebook. The many conveniences that come with using this app definitely have a price. 

Facebook, above all other apps, knows your online habits and tendencies. It keeps track of everything: what you are looking at, what you are liking, what type of content you are engaging with. Facebook then uses this data for its own gain, so it can show you targeted ads - the ones that you are most likely to click on. Messenger is no better than Facebook. In some way it is even worse since this is where we tend to share private information with others, assuming that they will stay private. TikTok is a video-sharing social media platform that has grown at a rapid pace over the last couple of years. And while it is definitely entertaining for its users, it also comes with a lot of questionable policies. Tiktok, just like the other apps we’ve mentioned so far, collects data about its users. This app has access to your camera, microphones, contacts, location, your social network contacts, and it is also collecting data about you based on your behavior on TikTok. On top of that TikTok’s current security system leaves a lot to be desired. The app has fallen victim to hackers and various cyberattacks over the last couple of years.

Your TikTok account is more vulnerable than your other social media pages so keep that in mind when using the app to communicate with others or handing over your personal information to the app. On top of that, make sure that you adjust the privacy settings in your TikTok account if you think that you don't want to give up the app completely. 

Weather Apps\t

Weather apps are often overlooked in discussions regarding app security, since there really isn't much to them - mostly people just check them during the week and don’t spend more than a couple of seconds using them. But turns out Weather apps are actually extremely bad when it comes to online security and privacy.

These apps take advantage of the fact that most of us don't think too much about our weather app security and use this for their own gain. If you’ve ever had a weather app, you’ll know that you have to allow the app to access your location in order for it to show you the right temperature and what kind of weather you can expect throughout the day. Well, these apps track your location even when you aren't using the app and then sell it to advertisers. Creators of these apps know that people won't spend too much time going through the terms and conditions of the weather app so they take advantage of that. These apps make a lot of money from just selling your data to third parties who will then use it to advertise their product better. The best way to avoid data breaches through weather apps is to adjust your settings on these apps so that they can not track your location if you are not using the app. 

WeChat

The last app on our list is WeChat. This is a social media platform and mobile payment app combined. Online Banking systems and payment methods have greatly simplified our lives and it’s very hard to argue against them. But sometimes these apps can also overstep the line. One example of a payment platform that does not care about its users' privacy is WeChat. If you have never used WeChat, there’s a chance that you have at least heard about it because this app is no stranger to controversies. It has been confirmed that WeChat monitors the exchange between users that happens through their app, it has been banned in multiple countries and there's a high chance that they are selling this data to third parties. When we handle our finance online, we always have to consider the risks that are unique to online banking and online payment methods. There are other options for people who want to handle their money online, and if you decided to do that, WeChat probably should not be your first choice. 

While spying on users is never a positive thing, it carries a whole new meaning when it’s about the app that we are supposed to trust with our money. Avoid taking risks, especially when the money is involved, and choose alternative payment platforms. 

Generally speaking, apps can be very dangerous when it comes to online security. With so many apps with all these different T&C, we are very often giving away too much information without thinking about it first. The best way to protect yourself against privacy breaches is to educate yourself about the potential dangers of using various apps, then safeguard your personal information and generally practice more caution when surfing online. Why VPNs sometimes fail?

You have a VPN to unblock the world, but some corporations never give up trying to limit your experience of the internet and show you what they want to show you, instead of what you want to see. Here’s the thing - it doesn’t have to be this way. 

There’s nothing more annoying than logging on with VPN protection you’re paying for, only to get some kind of error message fail from a streaming service or social media platform. 

“We think you’re using a VPN, please turn it off and try again” or “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy…” 

The reason you see these messages is often that the service you are trying to use blocks the IP address you are using with your VPN. 

Netflix, for example, blocks thousands of IP addresses which it knows are associated with VPN providers to try and stop customers from accessing content which isn’t licensed where they live. 

That’s right, depending on where you are in the world, Netflix and other broadcasters get to decide what content you see because it maximises their income. They can sell the same series again and again into different territories by dividing the world up into areas that suit them. 

Even though they’re a modern, big money streaming service who provide great content at a relatively reasonable price, deep down they’re just another corporation using old world methods to try and squeeze every bit of money they can out of their customers. Fair enough, it’s their right to do so. 

But it can seem unfair that what you are able to watch is determined by where in the world you live. And it doesn’t have to be this way! 

If my VPN fails, can I fix it? 

The short answer to this question is yes - the long answer is it depends on the situation. But don’t worry. We’ve got your back.

As well as learning how to fix it when you do receive an error message, it’s important to think about what you can do to stop this happening before it does. 

Firstly, many VPN providers have preferred streaming servers which you can use to access streaming content. This may be because they work with streaming providers to have these servers “signed off” for use on their platform. 

However, if you want to connect to a country other than the one you’re physically in, things might get a little more complicated. There’s a few steps you can take to get your VPN connection working again. 

The Eight Step Guide to fix proxy errors:   

  1. Try connecting to a different server. If you get an error message, do the classic IT solution and effectively reset. Disconnect, choose a new server and connect again. 
  2. Your local network blocks VPNs. You may not have realised, but it may not be the service you’re accessing blocking you - it might be where you are. If you’re at a school or college, streaming and social media sites are often blocked. VPNs can be too. So try leaving the local network. 
  3. Change protocol. If you’re using a VPN provider that allows you to, you can change the VPN protocol you’re using. That means if IKEv2/IPSec or OpenVPN aren’t working, you could just try switching to WireGuard, for example. You may find it fixes the problem as it uses a different form of encryption or accesses a different port. 
  4. Change port. If you’re using a modern VPN protocol like WireGuard, you can also consider trying to change the TCP/UCP ports you are using. It is likely to help you find your way around VPN blocks and remove you from the land of failure. Not all VPN providers have this capability though, so it’s worth checking if yours does first.
  5. Disable WebRTC. What’s WebRTC you say? Web Real Time Communication, dummy. It allows web browsers to speak to one another directly without the need for an intermediate server and it supposedly improves the performance of various browser functions like file sharing and video chat. For WebRTC to work, the two browsers need to know each other’s IP addresses. Streaming services can exploit WebRTC to get your true IP address without you realising, so if you can disable it, you’re less likely to see the dreaded proxy errors when streaming. In some browsers it’s easy to disable in settings, in Chrome you’ll need a WebRTC disabling browser extension. 
  6. Go Incognito. Using a private browser will stop any service you’re using from discovering your true location through a leak of geo-location data. That way, the service might spot that your VPN’s IP address says you’re in the UK, even though your geo-location data says that you’re in Germany. If that happened, it’s goodbye stream, hello proxy error. 
  7. Clear your cache. If you clear your cache regularly, any streaming service or social media service you’re using isn’t going to learn from your cookies that you’re using a VPN to appear as if you’re somewhere you’re not. It’s a quick fix that’ll probably get you up and running again. 
  8. Phone a friend. Most VPN services offer some kind of support, whether it’s 24/7 live chat or email. It might seem silly to use your VPN provider’s help to fix a problem like this but it’s not - it’s exactly why they’re there. Get in touch and ask their experts for assistance.

While traveling is usually a fun activity, it can get overshadowed by expansive flight tickets. These days people pay anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand dollars for their tickets. You might think there’s nothing we can do to change that but it turns out there is a way to make traveling cheaper by using VPNs. Here’s the thing about VPN protocols: they are not all the same. That means if you have particular needs when you go online, you might also need a particular VPN protocol. 

What is a VPN protocol? 

Let’s start with the basics. BlufVPN offers a Virtual Private Network to you - a private, underground tunnel for your information to travel - because it’s private, no one else can use it and because it’s underground, no one can see it either. That means you can go online safe in the knowledge that your personal data is safe, and that your digital footprint and location can’t be tracked by anyone. 

Each time you connect to a BlufVPN server, you’re using one of our available protocols. They all have their pros and cons, which we’ll go through in this blog, and like people none of them are perfect. It’s all about finding the right one for you. Like dating, but with less boring small talk. 

Different protocols for different needs 

To help you make the right decision, we’re going to play the part of protocol dating consultant. Imagine it like having a best friend to help you make the right choice when you’re out meeting new people. Only with more discussion of encryption algorithms. 

IKEv2/IPSec 

Internet Key Exchange version 2 and Internet Protocol Security suite are the meat and potatoes of the VPN protocol world - basic but reliable to get the job done. 

In terms of the pros of using this protocol, you can be sure of a very stable connection and decent speed even on mobile, as IKEv2 uses an IPSec tool called a multi-homing protocol to continuously establish a solid VPN connection even as you move around the world. 

Because it works with most leading encryption algorithms it’s a very secure protocol too, commonly connecting with an AES 256 bit encryption key.

On the downside, it has limited compatibility across platforms which means not everyone will have an easy time with it. Windows users are fine, as it was developed by Microsoft, but those on other platforms may want to choose another protocol. You also can’t choose which port to use when you connect with IKEv2/IPSec, which means it’s easy for some platforms to block. 

I rate it 8/10, it’s great for when I’m on the move, and it’s nice and stable so I know I’m safe. But the lack of compatibility can be annoying when I’m changing between devices…

OpenVPN 

There’s a reason that OpenVPN is a popular choice as a protocol for many VPN services, and that’s because it’s highly secure, open source and versatile. 

Being open source means that it’s essentially honest - it allows you to check for any skeletons in the closet of its coding, or potential vulnerabilities. It can run a vast number of different encryption protocols too, which makes it hugely versatile. On top of those great qualities, it can be run through either the UDP or TCP port, making it a very difficult VPN protocol to block when  it’s configured correctly. 

OpenVPN uses the same AES 256 bit encryption as IKEv2/IPSec, but as it’s so versatile and customisable, can also be configured to use RC5 and Blowfish encryption protocols. 

The compatibility of OpenVPN can also be a downside though - for a less experienced user, it can be overwhelming and excessively complicated to set up. The speeds it can achieve are also not the absolute best. 

I rate it 9/10. I love being able to switch up encryption types and which port I’m using depending on what I’m doing online - which means I can get around most blocks. If OpenVPN was that little bit faster, I’d definitely give it a 10. 

Wireguard

When you’re talking about VPN protocols, Wireguard is the one that gets back end developers and encryption specialists all excited, like school children around their crush. That’s because it’s the newest, sexiest protocol on the market and uses a brand new encryption algorithm which is making the other protocols jealous. 

Wireguard uses ChaCha20 symmetric encryption, Curve25519 for anonymous key exchange, Poly1305 for data authentication, and BLAKE2s for hashing. That might sound like technological nonsense, but a coder who is reading this just felt a little tingle. 

As well as using the latest technological advancement in the VPN world, Wireguard is the tightest piece of coding available in VPN protocol terms. It only uses 4000 lines of code to function, which is easily 100 times less than the likes of OpenVPN. 

It’s got variety too and can run through any UDP port, making it super hard to block. Last of all - the speed is excellent thanks to that ChaCha20 encryption, which no other VPN protocols currently have. 

The only downside to Wireguard is that it is still so new. That means VPN providers are finding their own solutions to slight gaps in Wireguard's security that are still being found. 

I rate it 10/10. The newest isn’t always the best, but if you need a fast VPN connection Wireguard is the one. When I’m streaming, downloading large files or gaming, I always go with it and it hasn’t let me down yet.

Which VPN protocol is my perfect match? 

As we’ve explained, the different VPN protocols can be best used in different situations. 

If you’re just looking for a seriously safe VPN connection that won’t ever let you down, then there’s an argument to go with OpenVPN all the time. It means that you can be sure your data will be safe and your anonymity preserved. 

When you’re looking for straight up speed of connection and a tiny bit of instability doesn’t bother you, maybe Wireguard is the one. You know it will always get the best connection speed because of that brand new ChaCha20 encryption.
